FAA Part 107 Requirements

All commercial drone operations in Ohio require the pilot to hold an active FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Our network operators are verified Part 107 holders.

State Drone Laws

Ohio does not have a comprehensive state-level drone law regulating commercial UAS operations. The state enacted HB 292 (2018) establishing the Ohio Aerospace and Aviation Technology Committee to study UAS integration, and the Ohio Department of Transportation hosts the Ohio UAS Center which promotes safe drone integration into the national airspace system. Ohio does not require a separate state-level drone license or registration for commercial operators beyond FAA requirements. All commercial drone pilots in Ohio must hold a valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and follow federal regulations including airspace authorization via LAANC for operations in controlled airspace. Ohio state parks managed by the Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) require a special use permit for commercial drone operations — contact the individual park office for application. Ohio does not have an explicit state preemption clause for local drone regulations, meaning municipalities may enact their own ordinances regulating takeoff and landing on public property. Operators near military installations (Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center in northeast Ohio) must coordinate with base operations and check for active TFRs. The Ohio General Assembly has introduced several UAS-related bills over the years (including SB 255 addressing drone surveillance privacy) but none have been enacted into comprehensive UAS legislation. The FAA controls all airspace above 400 feet AGL. Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland metropolitan areas have extensive Class B and Class C airspace requiring LAANC authorization.

Local Ordinances

The City of Beavercreek does not have a specific municipal drone ordinance. Commercial drone operators conducting business within city limits must hold a valid City of Beavercreek business license. Drone takeoff and landing in Beavercreek city parks requires coordination with the Beavercreek Parks and Recreation Department, which manages over 200 acres including Rotary Park, Friendship Park, and the Beavercreek Golf Club. Operations near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base require LAANC authorization for the FFO Class D airspace and coordination with base operations for any flights near the perimeter. The base hosts NASIC and AFRL research facilities with heightened security requirements. Commercial operators should carry minimum $1M liability insurance and verify active NOTAMs before any mission near the base.

Restricted Airspace

• Class D: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (FFO) Surface Area. Wright-Patterson AFB is immediately adjacent to western Beavercreek, with Class D airspace extending approximately 4.4 NM from the field up to 3,800 ft MSL. The base operates one of the longest runways in the Midwest (Runway 5L/23R at 12,600 ft) and hosts the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC) and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Much of western Beavercreek falls within or near the FFO Class D boundary. LAANC authorization is available for the FFO Class D surface area, but military operations take priority. Operators in the Colonel Glenn Highway corridor and near the Wright State University campus should verify their position relative to the FFO boundary before flight.
• Class C: Dayton International Airport (DAY) Outer Area. DAY Class C airspace extends approximately 10 NM from the airport. Beavercreek is approximately 12 NM southeast of DAY, placing the city just outside the Class C outer shelf in most areas. However, northern Beavercreek near I-675 may approach the DAY Class C boundary. Operators should check the FAA sectional chart for their specific grid square. DAY handles approximately 1.2 million passengers annually.
• Special Use: Wright-Patterson AFB Restricted Area R-3402. Wright-Patterson AFB has associated restricted areas and alert areas that can be active during military operations. The base hosts the 88th Air Base Wing and supports flight testing for AFRL. Commercial drone operators near the base perimeter should check NOTAMs for active restricted area status. The Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where the Wright brothers conducted early flight experiments, is located on base property and is a National Historic Landmark.
• Infrastructure: I-675 / US-35 / Colonel Glenn Highway Interchange. Beavercreek sits at the I-675 and US-35 interchange, two major highway corridors connecting the Dayton region. The Colonel Glenn Highway corridor runs along the northern edge of the city connecting to Wright State University and Wright-Patterson AFB. ODOT has active infrastructure inspection programs along these corridors. The I-675/US-35 interchange is a major infrastructure node for Greene County.
