FAA Part 107 Requirements

State Drone Laws

Connecticut regulates drone operations primarily through privacy statutes and state park rules rather than a comprehensive commercial drone licensing framework. Connecticut Public Act 23-76 (2023) addresses drone surveillance and privacy, prohibiting the use of unmanned aircraft to conduct surveillance of private property without consent and restricting drone operations near critical infrastructure facilities. Connecticut General Statutes § 29-307 restricts the operation of drones near critical facilities including power plants, substations, and water treatment facilities. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) prohibits drone takeoff and landing in all state parks, forests, and wildlife management areas without a special use permit issued by the DEEP Office of Outdoor Recreation. Connecticut does not require a separate state-level commercial drone license or registration, but all commercial operators must hold a valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and register their aircraft with the FAA. The state generally follows FAA Part 107 preemption on airspace regulation, meaning municipalities cannot enact their own airspace rules but may regulate takeoff and landing on public property. Commercial operators near military installations (Naval Submarine Base New London, Bradley Air National Guard) must coordinate with base operations and check NOTAMs. The FAA controls all airspace above 400 feet AGL and LAANC authorization is available for Class B, C, and D airspace across Connecticut, including the busy Bradley International (BDL) Class C and Igor I. Sikorsky Memorial Airport Class D areas.

Local Ordinances

Bridgeport is governed by Connecticut state drone law (Public Act 23-76, 2023) and FAA Part 107 regulations. The City of Bridgeport does not have a specific municipal drone ordinance as of 2026, but commercial drone takeoff and landing on city-owned property requires authorization from the Bridgeport Department of Public Works and the Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Department. City parks including Seaside Park, Beardsley Park, and Pleasure Beach require explicit permission for commercial drone operations. The Bridgeport Harbor and Port of Bridgeport area requires coordination with the Bridgeport Port Authority for commercial data collection work. Connecticut state parks and forests near Bridgeport (including the adjacent Roosevelt Forest in Stratford) require a special use permit from DEEP. Commercial drone filming requires a film permit from the Bridgeport Office of Planning and Economic Development and coordination with the Bridgeport Police Department. FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification is required for all commercial operations. LAANC authorization is required for flights within BDR Class D or New York Class B airspace boundaries.

Restricted Airspace

• Bridgeport sits beneath the outer fringe of the New York Class B airspace umbrella. The LGA Class B outer shelves extend over portions of southern Fairfield County. Commercial drone operations below 400 feet AGL are generally permissible under FAA Part 107, but operators should check the FAA B4UFLY app for specific shelf boundaries. LAANC authorization is available for the surrounding Class B and Class D areas.
• Igor I. Sikorsky Memorial Airport (BDR) is located within Bridgeport city limits on the Stratford border and has Class D airspace with a 4 NM radius surface area. Much of Bridgeport falls within or near the BDR Class D lateral boundaries. LAANC authorization is required for commercial drone flights within the BDR Class D area. BDR handles corporate aviation, GA, and helicopter traffic including Sikorsky Aircraft test flights from the nearby Stratford facility.
• The Long Island Sound coastline along southern Bridgeport has moderate to heavy helicopter traffic including news, medevac, corporate, and sightseeing helicopters transiting between NYC and eastern Connecticut. Bridgeport Harbor and the Port of Bridgeport have commercial shipping and barge traffic. Drone operators flying near the waterfront should maintain situational awareness of low-altitude helicopter and marine traffic. The Metro-North New Haven Line railroad corridor running through Bridgeport requires maintaining safe lateral distance per FAA Part 107.39.
• Sikorsky Aircraft (Lockheed Martin) facility in Stratford, immediately adjacent to Bridgeport, is a major helicopter manufacturing and test flight site. While there is no published TFR over the facility, operators should be aware of frequent helicopter test traffic in the area. The Coast Guard Academy and Coast Guard Station Bridgeport also have periodic helicopter operations along the waterfront.
• Pleasure Beach and Seaside Park are large waterfront areas with heavy public recreation use. FAA Part 107 prohibits flying directly over non-participants, so commercial drone operations in these areas require careful timing and coordination with the Bridgeport Parks Department. The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry route crosses Long Island Sound and generates marine traffic that operators should be aware of when flying near the harbor.
